Places Hotels and Resorts on Active Surveillance

Lagos State Government has dismissed the rumoured suspicion of cases of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-2019) in Gowon Estate of Alimosho Local Government area of the State.

The Commissioner for Health Prof. Akin Abayomi who dismissed the rumour making the round on social media that Chinese people who recently returned from Wuhan, China and residing in Osoba Close of Gowon Estate were having severe symptoms of Coronavirus disease and treating the symptoms themselves noted that there is no truth in the report.

Akin Abayomi while giving an update on the investigation carried out by the Ministry through its surveillance team declared that there is no suspected or confirmed cases of Corona Virus in Lagos State contrary to fake news been circulated in the media.

Speaking further, the Commissioner explained that the State surveillance team and other relevant stakeholders in Alimosho visited the alleged scene of the suspected cases and its environs on the 9th of February 2020 and discovered that there were no Chinese nationals residing or carrying on business in and around any of the streets of the communities visited.

Said he, “In a bid to further investigate the rumour, the surveillance team of Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Alimosho community stakeholders were in Gowon Estate and its environs on 9th of February, 2019, the alleged scene of the suspected cases”.

“The team interrogated residents living in and around Osoba Street in Alaguntan Ward, Segun Majekodunmi Street and other randomly selected houses in Alimosho, but there were no Chinese nationals residing or carrying on business in and around any of the streets and communities visited”.

Abayomi added that the team also interrogated the Chairman of Gemade Estate who was known to have affiliations with Chinese expatriates but discovered that the six Chinese expatriates who had worked in his factory at Igbesa, Agbara, Ogun State had returned to China since 2019 when their work permit expired.

“The team expanded its search to hotels around Alimosho and Gowon Estate where a Taiwanese lady was identified to have visited one of the hotels but nothing concrete linking her to china was found. Three Egyptian nationals who were sighted buying drugs at a particular pharmacy were also interrogated but were found to be business men who had no link whatsoever with china”, the Commissioner said.

Abayomi however noted that the contact phone numbers of Alimosho LGA Disease Surveillance Notification Officer were given to relevant stakeholders in Alimosho in case they come in contact or have knowledge of any Chinese nationals living around or anyone arriving from China.

He assured that the State surveillance team has scaled up its search by placing hotels and other resort centres on active surveillance to closely monitor visitors, travelers and non-nationals especially those of East Asian and Chinese origin.

The Commissioner said awareness and sensitization efforts have been scaled up in all communities across the State adding that engagement of community stakeholders on the virus and other infectious diseases is on course at the grass root level to further enhance capacity for effective monitoring of suspected cases in the communities.

“Dedicated call center phone lines have been circulated in the communities to enable prompt reporting of suspected Corona Virus Disease cases and other infectious diseases. The team is currently engaging and mobilizing Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Committees (CDCs) and Rapid Response teams (RRT) at LGAs and LCDAs across the state to support the surveillance efforts of the Ministry of Health”.

Concerning Rumours making the round about a suspected case of corona virus in Alimosho local government area,the Commissioner for Health Professor Abayomi says it is a fake rumour. He noted that Lagos has no suspected or confirmed case of corona virus.

“We heard the same rumour and we deployed our biosecurity team there yesterday. They have gathered a lot of medical and community intelligence and so far and it appears to us that there is no such thing and that this was fake news”.

“I want to use this opportunity to appeal to Lagosians and Nigerians that when you spread false rumours, it is actually very damaging. Though, it is testing our capacity to respond but is also very expensive and can cause panic in the community apart from the stigmatization it causes”, the Commissioner explained.

Abayomi noted that novel Coronavirus is not a case of a racial illness. He stressed that the disease can affect anybody.

“It is neither a Chinese disease nor an African disease, it is a disease and it can happen to anybody, so we are appealing to Lagosians, please do not spread false rumours, it is dangerous, causes harm and it is a waste of resources. But we are ready, if these episodes get to the media we will respond and if we are able to track down perpetrators of these fake news then the law will take its course”, he said.

MINISTER OF HEALTH VISITS LAGOS OVER CORONA VIRUS…Commends Preparation

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Enahire has commended the Lagos State Government for its cutting edge preparedness against the outbreak of infectious diseases in the state especially the Novel Coronavirus which is fast spreading across the world.

Dr. Osagie who gave the commendation during his tour of facilities at Mainland Hospital which is the Lagos State Infectious Disease Hospital expressed satisfaction at the level of infrastructure put in place by the State Government to effectively contain any infectious disease should there be a case.

He averred that the state government considering its vulnerability to infectious disease has learnt lessons from the Ebola episode of 2014 and reflected the experience in their level of preparedness.

“It is quite clear that Lagos has a clear-cut edge in managing infectious diseases and preparedness. I am extremely happy that Lagos is equipped in the area of knowledge built from the foundation it obtained from the 2014 Ebola outbreak which the state managed properly. The Minister said”

Osagie who also inspected Lagos State Bio-bank; the highest Bio-safety level 3 laboratory in West Africa located inside the Mainland Hospital, yaba commended the State government for deploying additional 30 health personnel to assist with surveillance at the entry ports.

“I am highly impressed, happy and proud to see this level of preparedness. I have not just learnt something; I am impressed that the state has taken science to a very modern and admirable level. This is obviously a place a lot of lessons will be learnt. He said”.

Dr.Osagie stressed further that the federal Government and the state government has a lot grounds for collaboration as the federal Government will be requesting support team from the State government to assist in certain areas where experiences gathered over the years can be shared.

“I am confident that Lagos is ready, they have the highest volume of air travels, so the preparedness here is more important than anywhere else”, The Minister said.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Health Prof. Akin Abayomi explained that the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Health has been working very hard to prevent an import of Corona Virus into the State and ramping up its preparedness for containment should there be an outbreak.

Said he, “Since the experience we had with Ebola four years ago, we have been building capacity, infrastructure, revising our policies and laws, training staff that are specially equipped to deal with outbreak of infectious diseases like Ebola, Monkey pox, Lassa Fever and Coronavirus if it comes here. So we are ready in Lagos, we have the facility, trained staff, and robust surveillance system in place to contain and effectively manage an outbreak”.

Abayomi noted that the State government is supporting the Federal Government with staff at the airport just to make sure that anybody coming in to Lagos goes through a thorough screening process adding that officials of the State Ministry of Health will be following up persons who recently returned from countries that has person-to-person transmission of coronavirus for 14 days in their home.

“So we are making it very tight and we hope that with the policies and measures put in place, we will not see a serious situation happening in Lagos but should that happen, our containment facilities at the Mainland hospital which is being rapidly up scaled will be able to effectively manage and contain it”, the Commissioner stated.

The Chairman Senate Committee For Health,and Senator representing Kwara Central senatorial District,Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe And his counterpart Senator Chukwuka Utazi representing Enugu North senatorial District and Chairman,Senate Committee For Primary Health care and communicable diseases have identified gaps capable of exposing the country to the novel Corona virus that broke out in China Early this year.

The Senators Who were Speaking During an oversight visit to the Apapa port,Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos And to other ports of entry noted that there was a huge shortage of Personel,especially Doctors,Modern Facilities and other critical requirement to handle any outbreak of the disease.

Both Senators who were grossly dissatisfied with the actual situation on ground told newsmen of their plans to relay the situation to the Minister Of Health.

To avert a re-occurence of the 2014 Ebola Episode that resulted in the loss of several Lives including Dr Stella Adadevor and Billions Of Naira,they appealed to Nigerians to embrace improved personel and environmental hygiene as the antidot against yearly outbreak of diseases.

Since the outbreak of corona Virus in Wuhan ,China about seven hundred lives have been lost and over thirty one thousand cases recorded.

The virus has also spread to about eighteen Countries of the World,making Nigerians to worry.

Meanwhile,the Lagos State Commissioner For Health Professor Akin Abayomi had earlier announced Planns with The Chinese Embassy In Lagos to quarantines nationals coming from Asian Countries For Two Weeks.
