The National Broadcasting Commission NBC says it will appeal the judgement of a federal high Court Abuja nullifying the powers of the commission to impose Fines on broadcast stations who violate provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting code.
The NBC in a statement signed by its Director General Balarabe ilelah says the broadcast regulator has applied for certified copy of the judgement.
Justice Omotosho in his ruling on the case by instituted by the incorporated trustees of the media against the NBC on Wednesday said the commission did not comply with the law when when it sat as a complainant and the judge on its own matter as such cannot confer Judicial Powers on itself to impose criminal sanctions.
The Nigerian Guild of editors had applauded the judgement as a vindication of its position on the suppressive powers of the Broadcast regulator to the course of press freedom in Nigeria.
