SEMOVITA DOES NOT CONTAIN PLASTIC MATERIALS …DG NAFDAC

03/07/23

PRESS RELEASE

The attention of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been drawn to a social media video showing a woman washing Golden Penny Semovita in a sieve using cold water.

The woman claimed that the Residue she got after sieving was plastic.

A similar video was shown in 2020 and that led to a Press Release similar to this.
Upon receiving the alerts from various quarters in the community in 2020, the Director General immediately gave a directive to conduct emergency post-marketing analysis using different brands of Semolina.

The Agency investigated this claim by conducting appropriate analytical testing in her internationally accredited laboratories.

The results showed that there was no plastic or any similar harmful contaminants in Golden Penny Semovita. It contained the expected components plus the required Vitamin A,NAFDAC therefore wishes to inform the general public that the claim in the social media video assertions is misleading.

The alleged Golden Penny Semovita is a brand of semolina, a very popular flour made from wheat and consumed in several parts of the world.

Semolina contains mainly water, carbohydrates and about 13% of gluten-forming proteins.
Gluten is made up of two classes of proteins – glutenin and gliadin, which upon addition of water combine to form gluten, a protein that gives nutritive value and imparts other characteristic properties to the product.

Glutenin normally gives a bread dough the ability to rise during baking while gliadin gives it the viscous and elastic (viscoelastic) properties, or it simply makes it extensible and elastic.

This latter property is the rubbery/plastic-like appearance that was exhibited in the said video. Semolina has no plastic content in it; it only exhibits viscous and elastic properties. The rubbery-like material that was observed in the video after many washings with water is the gluten that formed after the gluten-forming proteins get mixed with water.

Golden Penny Semovita is manufactured by Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc., a registered company which has been granted marketing authorization by NAFDAC to manufacture the product and offer for sale in Nigeria. The companys operations were certified by NAFDAC after meeting the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS).
NAFDAC wishes to reassure the public that Golden Penny Semovita and indeed all other semolina products registered by the Agency are safe for human consumption having been so approved by the Agency, following science-driven regulatory diligence. There is no cause for apprehension by consumers as such approved products are manufactured in line with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and in compliance with the Nigerian Industrial Standards, which is continuously monitored by NAFDAC.
Members of the public are implored to exercise discretion in the use of social media to address any suspicion they may have on regulated products. Resorting to social media has the tendency to cause fear and panic.
Rather, they should contact the nearest NAFDAC office or contact NAFDAC via online channels at reforms@nafdac.gov.ng Or Call: 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322) for immediate response.

EUROPEAN UNION REPORT ON 2023 ELECTIONS & THE PRESIDENCY

03/07/23

OLADIPO DG

The Presidency has rejected the final report of the European Union (EU) election Observation Mission in Nigeria on the 2023 polls.

The EU Mission had on Tuesday presented its report on the General Election in Abuja where it says the Elections Exposed a Systemic Weaknesses that needed to be corrected.

But the President in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties Communications and startegy Dele Alake on Sunday described the report as a poorly done desk Job.

Alake said the 2023 General Elections, particularly the Presidential Election won by President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress were credible, peaceful, free, fair and the best organised General Elections in Nigeria since 1999.

It says there is no substantial evidence provided by the European Union or any foreign and local organisation that is viable enough to impeach the integrity of the 2023 general election outcomes.

The Presidency said it has many reasons to believe that the report which it says was based on the views of fewer than 50 observers was to merely sustain the same premature denunciatory stance contained in EU’s preliminary report released in March.

The Presidency urged the European Union and Other Foreign interests to be objective in all their assessments of the internal affairs of the country and allow Nigeria to breathe.

SOME STUDENTS BEAT JAMB HI-TECH TO GET FAKE HIGH UTME SCORES

03/07/23

ELIZA D.D

PRESS RELEASE

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB says many of the results being branded as high scores in the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations are fake.

In a statement, JAMB Spokesman, Fabian Benjamin Says its attention has been drawn to several publications in both print and online media celebrating certain candidates for being high scorers in the 2023 UTME.

In an effort to set the record straight, JAMB says In many instances, some of these Candidates had actually obtained far lower scores than they are claiming and had used some funny software packages to manipulate their results to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

JAMB says the most pathetic of them all is the case of Miss Ejikeme Joy Mmesoma, who claimed to have scored 362 in the 2023 UTME and was awarded a three million scholarship.

Ejikeme is said to have even been honoured by the Anambra State Government when one of its top officials put a call through to JAMB to confirm her claim only for the Board to reveal that Miss Ejikeme Joy Mmesoma had actually scored 249 and not 362 as claimed.

JAMB insists she had manipulated her UTME result to deceive the public to fraudulently obtain scholarship and other recognitions.

JAMB reports a similar case was that of one Atung Gerald in Kaduna, who claimed to have scored 380 and his ethnic group had taken the issue up requesting that he should be given special recognition only for the JAMB to disappoint them with the incontestable fact that Atung never obtain the 2023 UTME application documents not to talk of sitting for the examination.

PRESS RELEASE

Lagos State Government has once again warned  Young Adults particularly Teenagers and youths against Negative peer pressure that could lead them to indulging in drug and substance abuse and illicit trafficking activities.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye who gave this warning recently at a School Awareness and Sensitization programme to commemorate the Year 2023 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Lagos.

He noted that peer pressure has been linked to drug and substance abuse, misuse, addiction and illicit trafficking especially amongst teenagers and youths.

Speaking through the Director, Pharmaceutical Services, Mrs. Oyebisi Omolanbe, at the programme held at the Agidingbi Senior Secondary School in Ikeja, Ogboye explained that people particularly teenagers and youths may be obligated to use and abuse drugs and substances, if their peers are doing it.

“Peers play a significant role in our lives, especially in late childhood and adolescence,  however negative peer pressure with regards to misuses and abuse of drugs and substances as well as trafficking of the same comes with a lot of burden and negative consequences”, he said.
Speaking further at the event which was organized by Lagos State Interministerial Drug Abuse Control Committee, Ogboye posited that young people must be equipped with skills and ability to take their mind off drugs, and stand up to say NO to peers who may want to lure them into drug and substance abuse.
“We are here to sensitize, educate and empower young minds with information that will help them make the right choices. Knowledge, they say, is power; so, having the right information about the abuse of drugs and substance, and how to stay clear of it cannot be overemphasized.

“Drug and substance abuse can affect every aspect of a child’s life and also have a negative effect in the society. So the earlier we nip it in the bud, the better for our youths and the society”, He said.
Ogboye noted that the Y2023 United Nations International Day against Drug abuse and Illicit Trafficking commemorative theme: “People First: Stop Stigma And Discrimination, Strengthening Prevention”, is well thought out.

He added that it is important that the mental health of citizens is prioritized, stressing that the fight against the abuse of drugs is a collective responsibility of everyone.
“So this year’s theme is people centered. Addicts and people who abuse drugs and substances should not be treated as criminals but treated as patients. We should see them as being ill. The way you treat any other patient, that is the way they should be treated. But for the suppliers, the distributors, they should be treated as criminals”, Ogboye said.

The Permanent Secretary stated that the awareness program organised for the school children has created an  opportunity to share facts on the dangers of drug abuse and also equip them with basic skills to say no to drug abuse.

He however tasked  all stakeholders to continue to evolve strategies targeting youths and young adults and implement well thought out interventions to achieve the required developmental goals in drug abuse free society.
Dr. Oluseyi Odewale, who was the facilitator at the event explained that the abuse of substance can mess up the brain of a young person and lead to dependency as the brain of a young person is not fully developed and can affect the place of judgement which will have a negative impact on how the child relates in the society.
“The brains of young people are still developing. And any attempt to introduce any  substance to that developing brain, will actually mess it up and the last place to develop is the place of judgement, which is the place of executive functions such as Memory, learning, decision -making, ability to weigh down time”,She said.
She however urged the students to carefully select their friends so as to avoid negative peer pressure that could lead to drug abuse and addiction.
A representative of  Pam Pharmaceutical Limited, Joseph Oluwaseun, who collaborated with the state governmentfor running an all inclusive system of governance with the private sector.
He assured that Pam Pharmaceutical will continue to engage in productive collaboration with the state government in the fight against drug abuse, adding that the fight against drug abuse is a collective responsibility of all citizens.
