EPE MATERNAL AND CHILDCARE CENTRE TO BE READY IN TWO MONTHS

….As Lagos Seeks to Improve Maternal and Child Health Services in Epe

Barring any major setback or challenge, the Lagos State Government has said the Epe Maternal and Childcare Centre (MCC) which is nearing completion would be ready for use by the Epe communities in two months.

Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye who disclosed this today during an inspection tour of the specialist facility explained that the completion of the four-floor edifice has gotten to an advanced stage with just a few fittings left.

Said he: “The work on the facility is quite advanced. Most of the infrastructures are in place; we just need to put some fittings in, do some finalizations, tidy up everything, and I think it should be up and running in about two months”.

Expressing satisfaction at level of work done so far, Ogboye said the Epe MCC like others that have been commissioned during the present administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is an improvement on the earlier ones which is consequent upon the lessons learnt for improved service delivery.

He noted that the Epe MCC has all the alternatives of power supply including electricity from the National Grid, a dedicated Generator, Solar Power and an Inverter which would keep the facility up and running without power outage when opened.

“Definitely we learn from each MCC that we have commissioned and one major thing we do is to give all the alternatives of power when we set up an MCC. For this MCC, We have Electricity from the Grid, a Generator, Solar power and then an Inverter. This also goes for each of the new MCCs that are coming up on stream.

“We are learning even how to distribute services and how to distribute space amongst the different departments, so definitely we are learning from each one and we are putting the learning into the next one we are doing”, the Permanent Secretary said.

Noting that the plan of the Governor Sanwo-Olu led administration is to have a maternal and child centre in every division of lagos, Ogboye said the idea is to ensure that the State indices for maternal and child health improves well while women of child bearing age and children get access to very good maternal and child health care services that would ensure mothers and their babies are alive and well

He added that the completion of the facility and commencement of operation would guarantee the safety of pregnant women in Epe and ensure that their antenatal as well as post-natal care needs are assured.

“I would like to use this opportunity to ask the Epe community to please protect this asset. They should see it as their own and see the people working here as their family. So help us take care of them and take care of the facility”, Ogboye stated.

When completed, the Epe MCC would be the third MCC to be completed by the present administration aside the Eti-Osa MCC and the Badagry MCC that was commissioned recently.

Ogboye was accompanied on the facility inspection tour by the General Manager, Lagos State Infrastructure Management Agency (LASIAMA), Ms. Nike Adekanbi; Director Health Care Planning Research and Statistics, Ministry of Health Dr. Dayo Lajide and a team from the Project Unit in the Ministry of Health.

LAGOS LAUNCHES ‘EACH ONE REACH 10’ VOLUNTARY BLOOD DONATION CHAIN CAMPAIGN

12/02/21

LAGOS LAUNCHES ‘EACH ONE REACH 10’ VOLUNTARY BLOOD DONATION CHAIN CAMPAIGN

Lagos State Government has commenced a voluntary blood donation chain campaign tagged ‘Each One Reach Ten’ campaign aimed at evolving a lifesaving culture of voluntary blood donation to meet with the growing demand for blood and meet up with the blood requirement of the State in line with WHO’s mandate.

The campaign with the slogan Advocate, Mobilize, Donate is geared towards recruiting and retaining voluntary blood donors by ensuring that ‘Each’ individual is encouraged to ‘Advocate’ for voluntary blood donation and ‘Mobilize’ at least 10 more people to donate blood voluntarily at least three times every year.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign at the General Hospital Lagos, the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Blood Transfusion Services, Dr. Bodurin Oshikomaiya explained that the campaign was initiated because of the urgency of ensuring availability of safe blood and blood products for transfusion through .

“We commenced Each One Reach Ten’ blood donation chain campaign to fulfill our mandate to ensure adequacy and ample access to safe blood in Lagos State through strategies anchored on recruiting and retaining voluntary blood donors as the bedrock for safe and adequate blood supply in Lagos”, she said.

Emphasizing the huge demand for blood and the need for voluntary blood donation, Oshikomaiya disclosed that about 37% of the population are eligible and clinically fit to donate blood stressing however that only about 10% of blood donated are from voluntary blood donors adding that someone is always in need of blood every two seconds.

The Executive Secretary noted that the State Government through the Blood Transfusion Service isconstantly expanding and improving its blood transfusion programs to provide safe and sufficient blood for clinical use through voluntary blood donors.

She added that the blood donation chain campaign is aimed at creating a culture to give, to develop an altruistic and selfless attitude to save lives and provide all-inclusive and innovative ways to encourage voluntary blood donation as well as increase and retain voluntary blood donors to meet with the growing blood demand of the State.

Osikomaiya stated further that the LSBTS has re-evaluated, re-strategized and re-invigorated its voluntary blood donation drives activities because of the COVID-19 pandemic noting that campaign activities is now tilting more towards increasing the number and frequency of donation by walk-in donors whilst outdoor external mobile drives are being reduced to prevent and limit transmission of COVID19 infection.

While applauding voluntary blood donors who go out of their way despite busy schedules in a bustling city like Lagos to donate blood in order to save precious lives, She appealed to new as well as regular blood donors to create a chain of blood donation by donating blood voluntarily as well as encouraging 10 others to donate so as to increase the availability of blood for transfusion especially during emergencies.

“For us to move towards 100% voluntary blood donation, government, policymakers, health workers and everyone needs to be a part of this campaign. I would therefore like to encourage everyone who is healthy and fit and weigh above 45 kilograms, aged from 18-60, to join this campaign and give blood”.

“People in good health who have never given blood, particularly young people, people who have given blood for other reasons including through cohesive forms of donation, should begin to do so as voluntary donors”, Oshikomaiya said.

She assured that the government remains committed in ensuring best practices in health care delivery across the State adding that the state will intensify its commitment in maintaining a secure and safe blood supply across the state.

The Medical Director, General Hospital Lagos, Dr. Ismail Ganikale who was also at the event applauded the Lagos State Blood transfusion services for its professional values in the discharge of its mandate. He also commended various individuals, religious organizations and non-governmental organizations who have identified with the state in boosting the supply of blood in the state.

Dr. Ganikale however encouraged all donors and various foundations not to relent in their efforts in assisting in boosting the supply of blood in the state. He assured that General Hospital Lagos as a means of contribution to all blood donors is always ready to assist anybody who holds a certificate of blood donation in their own time of need.

“An accident by definition is not something that will notify you when it will happen. If blood is not available, how do we save lives? That is why we cannot thank people like you enough for what you do. We appreciate you”, he said.

ENDING TUBERCULOSIS SANWO-OLU LAUNCHES 3 MOBILE CHEST X-RAY VANS FOR TB SCREENING

Mobile X-ray vans to move round Lagos to screen people

· Restate Commitment to advocacy and collaborative effort in fighting TB

Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has launched three mobile chest X-ray vans to support Tuberculosis (TB) screening, active case search and improve TB diagnosis in Lagos Communities.

The mobile x-ray vans which will be moving round the State to provide prompt chest x-ray services and effective diagnosis of TB within the communities were manufactured to specification and are adequately equipped to effectively provide comprehensive on site screening, diagnosis and treatment for TB.

Speaking at launch of the specialized vehicles, which held at the Evans Square, Lagos Mainland local government, Sanwo-Olu saidMobile X-ray vans were acquired by the State government in furtherance to its determination to explore innovative, efficient and latest practices in health care service delivery.

She disclosed that the State Government has also acquired 18 State-of-the-art X-ray machines evenly situated in 18 selected health care facilities across the State for TB Chest X-ray screening adding that citizens can go to any one of the facilities and get screened for TB, free of charge.

“It is hoped that the introduction of this Chest X-ray screening will bridge the gap of inadequate logistics for TB diagnosis, improve childhood TB diagnosis and ultimately bring TB diagnosis and care to the door steps of Lagosians.

“A total of 38,277 TB cases were missed in Lagos State in 2019 and it is hoped that the introduction of Lagos TB Chest X-ray screening will drastically reduce the number of missed TB cases in subsequent years”, Dr. Sanwo-Olu averred.

While noting that TB case notification rate has progressively increased over the years in Lagos State, the Wife of the Governor who is also the State TB champion disclosed Lagos has over 1,249 TB direct observed treatment (DOTS) centers spread across the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs which is geared towards increasing access to care.

“I want to state here that TB screening, diagnosis and treatment at any of these centers is entirely free. I also want to emphasize here that TB is totally curable”, she noted.

The Wife of the Lagos State Governor appealed to citizens not to stigmatize anyone suspected of having TB but rather help them seek and access diagnosis and treatment at any of the DOTS centres close to their home.

“I want to implore everyone to take the message of the fight against TB back home. I say it once again that TB is curable and anyone suspected of having TB should not be stigmatized but rather the person should be directed to the nearest TB treatment DOTS center for diagnosis and treatment. The Lagos free TB Chest X-ray screening is here for your use” she said.

Speaking earlier, the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi said theState Government is resolute in ensuring that Lagosians are appropriately empowered to become responsible for their health and well-being and take all necessary precautions to ensure that they are actively involved in the fight against communicable diseases such as Tuberculosis in the State.

Noting that it is imperative to prevent and reduce the burden of TB through awareness, early detection and prompt treatment of those affected, Abayomi who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye said awareness, early detection and prompt treatment are keys to favorable outcomes.

He explained that chest x-ray has historically been identified as one of the primary tools for detecting tuberculosis (TB), especially pulmonary TB adding that in the developed world, mobile mass radiography has been employed as a strategy for TB screening with resultant coverage of a huge proportion of the population.

“It has been proven that chest X-ray, isolation of people with infectious TB and provision of TB treatment could significantly reduce a community’s TB burden. These Mobile X-ray vans will be moving round the State to screen people, provide prompt CXR services and effective diagnosis of TB within the communities.

“This would undoubtedly accelerate the State’s TB response to reach targets and curb the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, while contributing towards efforts targeted at the end of the national and global TB epidemic.

“It is essential for all to know that as a united force, we can tackle the menace of TB, as we have done for other diseases that reared their heads to threaten the wellbeing of Lagosians. I would therefore like to enjoin us to make good use of the mobile x-ray vans whenever they are in our communities as they are there for us”, the Commissioner said.

The Director, Disease Control in the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Rotimi Agbolagorite who also spoke at the event stated with the support from various partners and stakeholdersbringing in several interventions, TB Case Notification which was 8,182 in 2010 and 9,750 in 2018 has increased to 11,723 cases in 2019 and all were placed on treatment.

“This accounts for about 20% increase in case finding as a result of the strategies deployed in the new Global Fund grant. However, in 2020, due to the global COVID -19 pandemic, we detected 7,356 TB cases in three quarters”, he added.

Present at the event were Chairmen of Lagos Mainland LG and Yaba LCDA, Mrs. Omolola Essien and Mr. Kayode Omilabu as well as representative of TB partnering organizations

VETERAN OKUNIYI CAUTIONS INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE OVER ARREST ORDER OF SUNDAY IGBOHO,SAYS YORUBA ELDERS ARE TO RESOLVE THE CASE

24/01/21

DANIELS G. O

PRESS RELEASE

Sunday Igboho: Veteran Okunniyi cautions IGP, Adamu, Says Yoruba Elders and Traditional Rulers are to resolve the matter

Disturbed by the rising tension in Southwest, Nigeria over the arrest order issued for Yoruba Nationalist Activist, Sunday Adeyemo Igboho by the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, Veteran Olawale Okunniyi, a distinguished delegate to the 2014 National Confab and Spokesperson of Project Nigeria Movement, PNM, a group of Senior Citizens and Statesmen/women on Sunday cautioned the IGP not to further exacerbate the rising tension in the Southwest by arresting Yoruba nationalist Activist, Sunday Adeyemo Igboho over his radical intervention to quell the unfortunate spate of kidnapping, ransom taking and murder in Southwest forest

Okunniyi, in a statement issued by his media office on Sunday warned that such arrest order at a time like this and on the issue of the pervasive criminality within southwest forest will only aggravate the situation rather than resolve it, as the current activism of Sunday Igboho is popular among the Yorubas and such precipitate arrest might trigger off an unintended civil strife in the Southwest.

The Spokesperson of Pro National Conference Organizations, PRONACO further informed that Elders and Traditional Rulers in the region are already consulting on the best way to handle the matter and a major intervention will be made soon.

His words: The Yorubas are really aggrieved and traumatised at the moment over the random kidnapping, raping, maiming and killings of their kinsmen and women in their forest by those considered as criminal herders, which has therefore made the radical intervention of Sunday Igboho popular among the Yorubas. So any attempt to arrest him by the State may backfire instead of resolving the heightening tension in land. What I know for sure is that Yoruba Elders and Traditional rulers are already consulting on the best solution on this matter. Okunniyi affirmed
