Nigerian reggae legend Majek Fashek is dead.

News of his death was confirmed in an Instagram post by his manager Omenka Uzoma.

He urged his fans not to mourn but celebrate his life and achievements for Nigeria.

Fashek popularly knows as ‘The Rainmaker’ ruled the reggae world in the late 1980’s and early 90’s with hits such as “Send Down the Rain” So Long Too Long” and “Jah People” among many others.

He also used his music to create social consciousness on some prevailing issues on the African continent with songs such as “Africa Unity” and “Free Africa, Free Mandela” which was a campaign theme for the release of the late South African political icon and anti-apartheid campaigner Nelson Mandela.

Majek subsequently battled years of addiction in the United States which seriously affected his health, finances and music career

His attempt to revive his music career following his return to Nigeria was not successful due partly to persistent bouts of illness.

He was admitted into the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in England last year after taking ill.
