The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says that a gas explosion was caused the blast which rocked Abule Ado area of Lagos State.

In a statement by the Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division, Kennie Obateru, on Sunday, the blast occurred after a truck hit some gas cylinders stacked in a gas processing plant located near the corporation’s System 2B pipeline right of way.

He added that preliminary findings indicated that the impact of the explosion was huge that it led to the collapse of nearby houses and damaged some NNPC pipelines.

Obateru said when the corporation heard about the explosion, it halted ongoing pumping operation on the Atlas Cove-Mosimi pipeline which was active at the time of the incident.

The NNPC spokesman appealed to members of the public and residents of the affected communities to remain calm and assured that the temporary shutdown of the petroleum products pipeline would not affect the normal supply of products to Lagos and its environs.

The Lagos state Government has advised all residents especially those above the age of 40 years to check the condition of their eyes regularly at least one in a year to ensure that their eyes are in good condition.

The Commissioner for Health Professor Akin Abayomi gave this advice after an awareness walk to commemorate year 2020 World Glaucoma Week in Lagos.

Prof Abayomi stated further that the eye is a very delicate organ in the body that requires proper attention and care. He added that particular attention should be paid to Glaucoma as it is a slow chronic disease that can lead to permanent blindness without giving any sign noted that the awareness walk is one of the ways the State government is employing to sensitize residents awareness on dangers of the eye condition as well as encourage regular eye check.

Abayomi stated that glaucoma screening and proper eye care can be accessed in any of the nine State-owned general hospitals that have specialists in ophthalmology.

Speaking in the same vein, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye explained that Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can lead to gradual worsening of vision or blindness if left untreated.
“The visual damage caused by Glaucoma is mostly irreversible, and this has led to the eye condition being described as the “thief of sight”, so early detection is essential to limiting visual impairment and preventing the progression towards complete blindness,” he noted

Ogboye listed family history of glaucoma, age and eye injury as factors that can predispose people to glaucoma, saying if one has a family history of glaucoma, the person may likely have it.

Glaucoma is a eye condition that comes up with advancing age just like hypertension and diabetes, It is also important you learn about Glaucoma, read and ask questions about it and more importantly as you pass the second and third decade of your life make sure you go to the hospital and consult your doctor at list one a year.

The World Glaucoma week is a global celebration targeted towards creating awareness and sensitizing the populace on the dangers of the eye condition which is referred to as the silent killer of eye sight.

The Lagos state Government has announced a successful break in person to person transmission of the vovid-19 virus in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi who disclosed this Friday at a news briefing to give updates on the #COVID19Lagos said all other identified contacts of the index case except the positive contact who has now tested negative to the virus and discharged, have exceeded the 14 days quarantine isolation period without symptoms.

Said he “The remaining contacts of the index case; those in Ogun and Lagos States remain symptoms free and they have exceeded their 14 days surveillance which means that we do not expect that any of them will turn positive from direct contact with the index case”

“In simple words, that mean that in Lagos, we have been able to interrupt the transmission between the index case and anybody in this environment, we have broken the circle of transmission and have not given the virus the opportunity to spread beyond one person. So, the threats posed by the index case to Lagos and Nigeria has been eliminated and we have not got an outbreak as a result of the interventions that took place in Lagos”

Abayomi explained that the positive contact of the index case tested negative after two consecutive tests conducted on him noting he has been certified to be virus free and subsequently discharged.

“His tests initially showed that he was positive to Coronavirus twice and now, he has tested negative to the virus on two consecutive tests carried out on him”, the Commissioner said.

However, on the index case, Abayomi stated that the Italian being managed at the Mainland General Hospital, Yaba remains on admission although is perfectly well now but he is still secreting the virus. He stated further that the patient is getting closer to being discharged as his immune system is gradually wiping out the virus.

“He is perfectly well now, we are only keeping him because he still has some secretion of the virus. Test shows that anytime from now, he may be negative. If he is negative, we will conduct another test within 48 hours after and if he is still negative, we will set him free.

“We are close to discharging the index case, we want to be sure he poses no danger to the society anymore.”

The Commissioner however assured members of the public not to panic stating that government will continue to respond swiftly and take necessary actions to contain the spread of the disease. He added that the state government will continue to strengthen its surveillance and will be sending more medical personnel to the point of entry at the Airport.

The Minister of health Osagie enhanire says the Second patient quarantined after testing positve to covid 19 in nigeria has now tested negative.

Speaking during a briefing with newsmen on Friday in Abuja,the ministervEhanire noted that the viral load is insignificant in the patient and will soon be discharged.

Ehanire Also urged Nigerians to get vaccinated for yellow fever at designated centers.

SIX MORE COVID-19 SUSPECTS QUARANTINED IN LAGOS

Six more suspects of covid-19 have been isolated in Lagos,while another set of three Suspects from the index case Tests Negative

Among the new suspects are a family of four children and their teacher who recently returned from the United States of America and now at the
Biosecurity Facility of the Mainland Infectious disease Hospital, Yaba.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi who disclosed this on Wednesday evening at a news conference to give updates on COVID19 in Lagos stated that the four children and their teacher were in close proximity with someone who had coronavirus infection.

He explained further that the first test carried out on them was negative adding that a confirmation tests will still be repeated to determine the next point of action.

Abayomi also announced that a man who recently returned from the UK and suspected for COVID19 is in Isolation at the Mainland Hospital noting that his samples have been collected and test being conducted to determine his status.

The Commissioner revealed that the three suspected persons from France, England and China who had earlier been in isolation at the Mainland Hospital tested negative and have been discharged.

He explained that the index case is responding well to treatment adding that his viral load is going down significantly with no symptoms exhibited. He however stated that he cannot be released into the community now until the virus is undetectable and cannot infect others.

On the second confirmed case, Abayomi noted that he is doing well with no major symptoms but only exhibits minor aches and pains.

Answering question on the people that earlier left Lagos for other States in the country, the Commissioner stated that the information has been passed on to the National Center for Diseases Control (NCDC) so that they will be tracked in the States they have gone to with the assistance of the Epidemiologists from the states.

Abayomi revealed that the two passengers on the Turkish Airline who could not traced because of wrong information have been found within 24 hours when their names were published by the media adding that the State have already gotten in touch with them.

He advised the members of the public to continue observing both environmental and personal hygiene by washing their hands regularly with soap and clean running water as well as keep their environment very clean
