MORE CASES OF CHOLERA SUSPECTED IN LAGOS, FATALITIES INCREASE TO 21

PRESS RELEASE

BENEDICTA TD

Following the last update on the cholera outbreak in Lagos, which reported 350 suspected cases and 15 fatalities, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi, disclosed that the total number of cholera cases has increased to 401 across Lagos, with Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa recording the highest numbers.

Dr. Ogunyemi revealed this today while providing an update on the outbreak after meeting with members of the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC). She added that the death toll has also risen to 21, an increase of six from the previously reported 15 fatalities.

According to her, the rise in cases was anticipated following the Ileya festivities, during which large gatherings occurred. She however noted that suspected cases are subsiding across LGAs particularly in previously affected LGAs due to State Government interventions and surveillance efforts.

The Special Adviser stated that the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Health and other sister agencies, is maintaining rigorous surveillance and monitoring of the situation and implementing planned programs and activities to curb the spread.

“The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Environment and its agency, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), continues to collect samples of water sources, food, and beverages to identify the source of contamination. We have also intensified our surveillance activities in communities, particularly in affected local government areas, to address the situation head-on.

“We are also working with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education as well as the Ministry of Tertiary Education to ensure all precautions are taken in our schools to protect children and scholars as they return. Residents must, however, remain vigilant, practice good hand hygiene, and participate in community sanitation activities to stop the spread of cholera,” the Special Adviser stated.

She advised that citizens seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms such as watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, general malaise, and fever, stressing that treatment for cholera is provided free of charge at all public health facilities.

While noting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to ensuring that residents of Lagos receive quality and affordable health care, the Special Adviser extended the gratitude of the State Government to local, national, and international partners—including UNICEF, WHO, NCDC, NIMR, Red Cross, and others—for their support in combating the outbreak.

“Appreciation is also extended to the dedicated team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab scientists, environmental health officers, Water Corporation officers, surveillance officers, heads of agencies, members of PHEOC, and volunteers who are working around the clock to combat the disease and keep Lagos safe,” Ogunyemi said.

TODAY’S WORD

Today’s Scripture
You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.
Psalm 3:3, AMPC

THE LIFTER OF YOUR HEAD
Sometimes circumstances may convince us to keep our head down. But we cannot go through life looking down, thinking about our problems, dwelling on how bad it is, reliving every negative thing that’s happened, and expect to have God’s best. You may feel you have too many problems, but God is the glory and the lifter of your head. He is the source of your help.

The enemy tries to weigh you down with heavy burdens and depression and convince you to stay focused on your difficulties. Before long that discouragement is like a heavy weight you are dragging around. But if you allow God to be the glory and the lifter of your head, and work with Him to shake off that discouragement, the only thing that will weigh on you is the favor of God. You’ll be heavy with joy, with blessings, with victory. When you can’t lift your head on your own strength or when circumstances have overwhelmed you, that’s when God will show up as the glory and the lifter of your head.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
“Father, thank You for being a shield about me, my glory and the lifter of my head. Thank You that the enemy has no right to weigh me down with discouragement and heaviness. I declare that I am looking to You as the source of my help and victory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

SECTION TWO

There was a man in the Bible by the name of Jabez. His name was rather unfortunate. It means “sorrow” because his mother “bore him in pain” (1 Chron. 4:9). What a name to have!

But Jabez cried out to God, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” (1 Chron. 4:10).

Some preachers claim that believers should not pray “selfish” prayers for themselves to be blessed. Jabez’ prayer would probably fall under their definition of a “selfish prayer” as it was all about him asking God to bless him, enlarge his territory, be with him, and protect him.

But God didn’t reprimand Jabez for asking Him for these blessings. Without any fanfare, the Bible in the very same verse simply records that “God granted him what he requested.”

That was all. No drama, no long list of what Jabez had to do or not do. It’s really that simple. God heard his prayer and granted his request! No rebuke, no instructions, no “Jabez, if you want Me to bless you, you must first do this.”

No, God honored the man’s faith and turned his sorrow into joy and his pain into blessings—all because he had an unshakable confidence in how good God is and asked big!

My friend, have a good opinion of God. He is not out to get you. He loves you and desires to unleash His favor into every area of your life. He loves it when you call upon Him. And He promised that He would answer when you do.

Just see Him declaring to you Jeremiah 33:3: “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”

Could it be that we are not seeing many breakthroughs because we have made asking God for big things a taboo with our religious and legalistic rhetoric? Could it be that we are just not seeing many blessings because we have not been asking God and seeking Him with a confident expectation of good?

My friend, it gives your heavenly Father great joy when you ask Him. It’s His good pleasure to bless you as well as your family (Luke 12:32). Stop being held back by erroneous beliefs about God, and start asking Him for whatever is on your heart today!

YOU CAN’T CHANGE WHAT’S HAPPENED TO YOU IN THE PAST, BUT YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT RIGHT NOW.

TODAY’S WORD

Today’s Scripture
Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty—he is the King of glory.
Psalm 24:9–10, NIV

LIFT UP YOUR HEAD
David said, “Lift up your head, and the King of glory will come in.” It’s easy to go through life always looking back, focusing on what didn’t work out, on who hurt you, and on the mistakes you’ve made. As long as you’re not looking up and you are discouraged, with no joy, no passion, and no zeal, the King of glory will not come. As long as you’re living in regret, you won’t move ahead to the bright future God has in store.

You can’t change what’s happened to you in the past, but you can do something about right now. Whether it happened twenty minutes ago or twenty years ago, you need to let go of the negative baggage from the past. Instead, start looking up and saying, “Father, I’m excited about this day. I’m moving forward with my life.” When you’re really alive, hopeful, grateful, passionate, and productive, the King of glory, the Most High God, will come in and make a way where there is no way. As long as you have breath, keep your head up.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, thank You for being the amazing King of glory, the Lord Almighty, and the keeper of my dreams. Thank You that I can lift my eyes to You and know that You will come in. I declare that I’m letting go of the past and moving forward in faith, knowing that my best days are ahead. In Jesus’ Name

I want to give you a simple but critical truth. Memorize this truth. Feed on it. Let it take root in your spirit and become an anchor in your life. You will never be the same again.

SECTION TWO

Are you ready? Here it goes:

As a child of God, no matter what happens in your life, your Father in heaven loves you dearly and nothing you do can ever change that.

Will you believe that today? Whether you are going through good times or facing challenging times, you need to know that your Abba loves you.

There is nothing that you can ever do to make Him love you more, and nothing that you can ever do to make Him love you less. Even—or perhaps especially—when you feel like you have failed, know that you will always be the apple of His eye. Always.

God loves you with an everlasting love (Jer. 31:3). A love that is the same yesterday, today, forever.

Feel your Daddy God enfolding you in His embrace right now. You are safe. You are utterly loved and completely accepted.

He loved you before you ever knew Him. His love for you has nothing to do with anything that you have done for Him. Nothing you do will ever affect His unwavering, unconditional love for you.

There is nothing for you to prove. You only need to rest and receive your Abba’s love. Let your life become established and grounded in a love that is so perfect that no challenge or adversity will be able to knock you down.

If you think that you’ve messed up, turn to your Father. In His loving arms you will find hope, security, and refuge from any storm.

I love how the apostle Paul puts it: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? . . . Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:35, 37–39).

Beloved, there are no caveats or disclaimers when it comes to the love of your heavenly Father. The Bible plainly states that nothing shall be able to separate you from the love of your Father in heaven. It’s an absolute declaration and promise.

“Nothing” means nothing. As a believer, this means that even your mistakes, failings, and sins cannot separate you from the love of your Father. Hallelujah!

GOSPEL CORNER : WHETHER YOU HAVE MUCH OR A LITTLE, WHETHER IT’S OLD OR NEW, TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN YOU AND TAKE GOOD CARE OF IT.

TODAY’S WORD

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
WHATEVER YOUR HAND FINDS TO DO, DO IT WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT.
ECCLESIASTES 9:10, NIV

DO IT WITH EXCELLENCE
Some people never go to church or listen to a sermon or read the Bible. Instead, they’re reading your life. They’re watching how you live. Make sure you look and live the best you possibly can. The Almighty God lives in you, and you represent Him. Make sure you’re representing Him in a way that brings praise to Him, whether it’s through your life, your house, your car, your clothes, your cubicle, or your office.

You may be in a situation today where everybody around you is compromising their integrity or taking the easy way out. Don’t go there. Be the one to have an excellent spirit. Be a cut above and set the highest standard. Give it your all and produce more than is expected. Whether you have much or a little, whether it’s old or new, take pride in what God has given you and take good care of it. Do your job to the best of your ability and live in such a manner that when people see you, they are attracted to your God. Be the best witness you can be.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, thank You for calling me to be a person of excellence in everything I do and always be my best. I want that excellence to flow out of my heart of love for You. I believe that as I give it my all, I will see Your goodness and favor in my life in new ways. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

SECTION TWO

Resting in the finished work of Jesus is not inactivity or laziness. Rest will always result in Holy Spirit-directed activity.

While you are trusting God for your healing, you may need specific wisdom to deal practically with your physical symptoms. This comes from the Holy Spirit. He wants to guide you into all truth and lead you to victory.

For example, if you have a stomach ulcer, He may tell you, “Stop that stressful activity,” or “Spend more time playing with your kids.” You see, He knows exactly what the problem is and has the perfect solution that will bring about the results you desire!

Beloved, if you live by the Spirit and follow His promptings, you will find life, peace, and victory!

GOSPEL CORNER : WHEN WE HAVE FAILED AND ARE COMPLETELY WORN OUT BY THE FIGHTS OF LIFE, HE OFFERS HIS SHOULDERS IN FELLOWSHIP. HE IS OUR SANCTUARY. HE IS OUR HOLY PLACE

17/06/24

I want to show you how there are no insignificant details in the Bible by uncovering hidden truths concealed in the names of the six cities of refuge found in Joshua 20. Read along with me and let’s see what the Lord has for us: “So they appointed Kedesh in Galilee, in the mountains of Naphtali, Shechem in the mountains of Ephraim, and Kirjath Arba (which is Hebron) in the mountains of Judah. And on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness on the plain, from the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead, from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, from the tribe of Manasseh” (Josh. 20:7–8, boldface mine).

Let me give you the meaning of the names in order of their appearance. Kedesh means holy place or sanctuary. In the cities of refuge, people sought asylum in the sanctuaries.

Then we have Shechem, which means shoulder. Shechem, by the way, is where Jacob’s well is. Our Lord Jesus met the woman at the well in Shechem. Joseph was buried in Shechem and his tomb is still there.

Next, we have Kirjath Arba, which is Hebron. Hebron means friendship or fellowship, and is the place where Abraham and Sarah were buried.

Then, on the east side of the Jordan River, we have Bezer, which means fortress, followed by Ramoth, which means heights or highly exalted. We end with Golan, which means rejoicing or joy.

Now, let’s put these names together to see the message for us: You can find sanctuary (Kedesh) on the Lord’s strong shoulders (Shechem), which He offers in fellowship (Hebron). He is our fortress (Bezer) and He highly exalts (Ramoth) us above all our troubles with great rejoicing (Golan).

Beloved, when we have failed and are completely worn out by the fights of life, He offers His shoulders in fellowship. He is our sanctuary. He is our holy place, where we are set apart from the world. When we respond to His desire for fellowship and climb on His broad shoulders, He lifts us up.

Hallelujah, all praise and glory to the Name above all names! The names paint a stunning picture of our Lord Jesus, stooping down to where we are, and offering His stronger shoulders to us when we are fearful and weary. What a beautiful picture of the Good Shepherd rescuing His lost sheep!

GOSPEL CORNER : WHEN JOSHUA CALLED FOR THE SUN AND MOON TO STAND STILL, GOD MADE THE EARTH STAND STILL INSTEAD. JOSHUA’S REQUEST WAS SCIENTIFICALLY INACCURATE, BUT NEVERTHELESS, GOD HONORED JOSHUA’S CHUTZPAH FAITH!

16/06/24

Joshua, Moses’ successor who led the children of Israel into the promised land, was someone who dared to ask big. When Joshua was caught in the thick of battle with his enemies and the sun was about to set, he cried out for the sun and moon to stand still, and the Bible goes on to record that God answered his prayer.

I love this story. When my leaders and I were in the plains where this battle took place, we could see the sun over Gibeon on one side and the moon over the Valley of Aijalon on the other side. Both the sun and moon could be seen at the same time from that location.

Standing there, I could just imagine Joshua in the midst of the battle, raising his voice and pointing to the sun on one side to stand still and then turning to the moon to issue the same command. Joshua was asking God for more daylight because the momentum of the battle was to their advantage. He wanted to completely rout his enemies and not give them time to regroup.

When you think about what Joshua asked, it was both an audacious and inaccurate request! If you were attentive during your science classes in school, you know that the earth orbits around the sun, not the sun around the earth!

So technically, when Joshua called for the sun and moon to stand still, God made the earth stand still instead. Joshua’s request was scientifically inaccurate, but nevertheless, God honored Joshua’s chutzpah faith! He understood that what Joshua needed was more daylight, and He made it happen.

Isn’t it encouraging to know that God didn’t correct Joshua and give him CliffsNotes on how the solar system that He built actually functions? It gives me great encouragement to know that even when our faith confessions may not always be perfect, God still honors our hope and faith in Him. He loves it when we ask Him for big things.

My friend, you can ask of Him, knowing that the battle truly belongs to the Lord, and that He will fight for you the way He fought for Israel because you are His covenant child.
