NANS KICKS AGAINST FEES HIKE

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS is appealing to various tertiary institutions and privately-owned schools who have increased school fees, to retract their steps until the education funding programmes of the incoming administration is unveiled.

NANS vice president incharge of National affairs at a briefing in Abuja, says already in the last couple of months, hundreds of tertiary institutions students have withdrawn, over failure to pay new and high school fees.

While seeking the present administration’s intervention, NANS says school fees have been increased by 300, 500 and even 1000 percentages.

On the proposed 800 million dollars palliative grant from the world bank, NANS says it is an insult to the Nigerian state and condemns the move

NANS also called for am end to fuel scarcity.

LABOUR PARTY ON PETER OBI’S DETENTION

The labour party has confirmed arrest, detention and release of its presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi in London.

In a statement by the Obi Datti media, Peter is already back to Nigeria from the United Kingdom where he celebrated Easter.

The statement signed by the head of media, Diran Onifade said “traducers trail Obi to the UK as the London immigration says he was being impersonated”

Diran said Obi was accosted by the immigration at the Heathrow airport in London on April 7,2023 where he queued for the necessary protocols.

Diran said Obi was questioned for a duplication offense which means someone has been impersonating him in London, and the impersonator could be committing weighty crimes in his name to implicate him.

He said Obi ‘s telephone line was also bugged when they were possibly looking for information to portray him.

The labour party condemned all forms of attacks on the presidential candidate Peter Obi.

UPDATE ON COLLAPSED BUILDING IN BANANA ISLAND : LASG BEGINS INVESTIGATION

A release from the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mukaila Sanusi has stated that the commissioner for physical planning and Urban Development, Tayo Bamgbose- Martins was at the scene of the incident where he confirmed that the said building was unapproved.

According to the preliminary statement from the National Emergency management agency ( NEMA) ,the building is located on first avenue Banana Island. Some construction workers at the bullring were said to have been trapped under the rubble as others were said to have jumped from the top floors

Meanwhile, the Few Persons who sustained injuries are being treated. There is no fatality. This unfortunate incident happened while casting was being done.

A 7 storey building at Banana Island, Lagos state just collapsed.

Emergency responders moving to the scene of the incident to rescue some victims still trapped under the rubble

The Seven storey building under construction collapsed at the high brow area , Banana Island in Iloyi, Lagos state Wednesday evening.

According to the preliminary statement from the National Emergency management agency ( NEMA) ,the building is located on first avenue Banana Island. Some construction workers at the bullring were said to have been trapped under the rubble as others were said to have jumped from the top floors

Some kids walking around when the building collapsed were unhurt as they narrowly escaped from the area.

As of the time of filling this report, emergency responders were on their way to the scene of the incident.

Chief Custodian Of Eyo Masquerade Warns Against Its Use.

Following the premiere of the film “The Gangs of Lagos” produced and directed by Nigerian filmmaker Jadesola Osiberu on Friday April 8th 2023 in Lagos, a Lagos Chief has expressed reservation on the use of the “EYO MASQUERADE” in the movie.

The Akinsiku of Lagos and the Olori Eyo; Chief Adebola Dosunmu, in a video he shared on his Instagram said depicting the “Eyo Masquerade” in the movie is unacceptable; for the tradition and heritage of the state.

He explained that the use of Eyo in a film is meant strictly for stage plays of deceased kings, chiefs and individuals who have contributed significantly to Lagos State.

Chief Dosunmu however warned that it is a taboo for anyone to bring out the “Eyo Masquerade” without certain rites; adding that there would be consequences for such action.

BENUE MASSACRE:SECURITY COUNCIL REACHES COMPROMISE,SUSPENDS OPERATIONS OF LIVESTOCK GAURDS FOR 2 WEEKS

Following the recent spate of killings in some communities of Benue State the State security council rose from its emergency meeting suspending the operations of the State owned livestock guards.

State Governor Samuel Ortom who made this known after the security council meeting in Government house in Makurdi said the suspension will last for 2 weeks to allow herders who came in with cattle take them out so the people can live in peace.

Renewed suspected herder attacks within the past week which led to the gruesome murder of over a hundred people in parts of the nation’s rural communities necessitated this emergency expanded security council meeting.

Chief security officer of the State Governor Samuel Ortom sets the tone for deliberations highlighting the recent attacks as priority and ways to end the killings.

After an extension closed door session the State security council makes public its resolution.

The expanded security council meeting chaired by the State was attended by his deputy Benson Abounu, the speaker of the State assembly security heads,traditional and religious leaders as well as the 23 local council Chairman.

Cross River Road Crash:FRSC Confirms Six Dead in Ogoja Accident

No fewer than six persons have been confirmed dead in a ghastly motor accident which occurred in ogoja local government area of Cross River State,Tuesday afternoon.

The state FRSC sector Commander,Abdulahi Hassan, confirmed the accident to Journalists in Calabar, stating that crash involved a a heavy-duty truck and a Toyota bus.

Hassan said ,eight male and one female adults were in the two vehicles while six of them died instantly, others who sustained various degrees of injuries have been taken to the hospital.

He said those in the hospital have been taken over by the medical personnels at the General Hospital Ogoja.

The Sector Commander warned drivers on over speeding ,explaining that some of the road accidents are avoidable if drivers listen to the rules of driving on the highway.

MOB KILL 500 LEVEL OAU STUDENT ON CAMPUS OVER PHONE THEFT

A 500 -Level Student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Okoli Chizoputam, has been reportedly killed by mob who were also students of the institution over alleged phone theft.

The unfortunate incident according to information happened on Monday at Awo Hall, Obafemi Awolowo University Campus.

According to a statement released by the Students Union Government, SUG, President, Folahan Festus, the student was pronounced dead on arrival at the Emergency Department of the OAU teaching hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

We gathered that the deceased who was the student of OAU, from the department of Civil Engineering was accused of phone theft by some students who descended on him and allegedly beaten him to death

Meanwhile, the administration of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has condemned, in strong terms, the incidence that led to the death of a part 5 student of the institution.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that preliminary investigation revealed that the student died of a mob action on the allegation that he stole a phone.

Saddened by this ugly development which he described as unfortunate, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, has set up a committee to unravel the circumstances that led to this incident.

The action of the mob, being a violation of the law of the country and of the University regulations, has been reported to the police who have commenced investigations.

The University administration commiserates with the parents of the deceased, staff and students, and prays that God will grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

He admonished the students to desist from taking laws into their hands and to report any criminal activities to the University authorities for immediate actions.

EDO STATE COLLEGE OF NURSING VS PRECIOUS UMORUGOV OBASEKI ORDERS RE-ASSESMENT OF STUDENT

The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has ordered the re-assessment of Precious Umoru on Thursday, April 13, 2023 to begin her training at the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

This was disclosed by the Provost of the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, Prof. Patricia Ukaigwe.

CAPTION: Precious Umoru is said to have been admitted at the College and initially advised to withdraw after preliminary assessment of her physical condition, which was not disclosed at the point of admission.

The School’s Admission Committee had deemed her eligible based on her cognitive function and score on the CBT exam, but upon her arrival at the school premises, the hostel manager observed that she has unstable gait and tremors.

A meeting was called between the Counselling Department of the College and Precious Umoru’s parents, where the nature and history of her condition were reviewed to reach a fair decision on her physical fitness for the College’s rigorous training.

As part of this process, a preliminary assessment was conducted which suggested that she might not be able to withstand the physical rigours of midwifery training.

The rescheduled assessment will take place on the scheduled date and the public will be provided with the necessary updates on the exercise.
