REDESIGNED NAIRA NOTES SUIT AGAINST CBN : GOVERNOR OBASEKI DISTANCE SELF

The Edo State Government has distanced itself from the comments and moves by the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai and some other governors against the currency swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

A statement signed by the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie distanced the State Government from the comments of the Kaduna State Governor and urged for guided utterances and against inferences in such critical matters, especially in the heat of the political season.

He said Edo State was not a party to the suit instituted by the Governments of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara States against CBN’s policy and so took exception to the claim by the Kaduna State Governor that the move by the three state governments was backed by Nigeria’s thirty six State Governments.

Crusoe Osagie noted that the currency swap policy, which is intricately linked to the cashless policy of the CBN, is aimed at promoting financial inclusion; preventing inducement of voters in the forthcoming elections; tackling corruption and money-laundering and checking ransom payments among other cash-based financial infractions.

He acknowledged that the State Government is aware of the difficulties that have arisen from the cash swap policy and empathised with all Nigerians over the challenges faced with accessing the new notes as well as other difficulties in conducting financial transactions in the last few days.

Osagie added that the situation is being managed by the concerned authorities and relief being sought by the authorised agencies but it was disingenuous for a suit to be filed by three state governments and then inferences made to the effect that it was the entire state governments in Nigeria that sued the Federal Government and that they all stood against the CBN’s policy.

BAUCHI WHEAT FARMING: FMANEMPOWERS OVER 1,000 FARMERS TO BOOST PRODUCTION

09/02/2023

PUBLISHER: SHINA J.O

Wheat production: FMAN
empowers over 1,000 farmers to boost wheat production in Bauchi.

In a bid to discourage the importation of wheat into Nigeria, over one thousand local farmers from six Bauchi local government areas have been empowered with soft loans and improved varieties of wheat seedlings.

The Flour Milling Association of Nigeria, (FMAN), said this during a Green Field Day Celebration in Bauchi, aimed at helping local farmers with the requisite knowledge and techniques, on how to cultivate wheat, and have a good yield at the end of the farming season.

The variety of wheat cultivated by farmers in Jama’are Local Government Area of Bauchi State with the introduction of new and improved varieties is indeed a proof that Nigerian local farmers are gradually keying into massive production of wheat, to catch up with other nations.

In Bauchi, the cultivation of wheat, according to the organisers, has improved from three hundred hectares with about four hundred farmers in 2022, to seven hundred hectares with over one thousand local farmers in 2023.

Ahmed Barau Jama, one of the wheat farmers said, he has been in the business of wheat farming for the past ten years.

According to him, the long period he has spent on the business has made him better knowledge, adding that the introduction of new varieties of wheat, as well as the new techniques, will further boost his business.

He identified the value chain of their products as a major challenge in Nigeria, despite its high demand in the international market.

Following its scarcity globally, due to forex challenges, the wheat farmers in Nigeria are being urged to intensify efforts in cultivation, to reduce importation, thereby creating more value chains for the indigenous producers.

According to the Survivor of FGM Comfort Udoh , there are some girls that died in the process of circumsizing them and there are some going through a lot but can’t say anything. They just keep quiet. “It is an evil that is eating us in this clime.

“It is evil barbaric, it is not a good thing. Government, individual should make a very urgent decision to stop the menace.

“You don’t need to be quiet, we should increase the awareness in religious homes. The churches and the mosques. Anywhere we find people gathering, we should educate them. So many people are not aware, some are aware but they can’t speak up.

The Founder of Cee-Hope Mrs Betty Abbah, at the event said 6th February is globally recognised to beem a search light to end Female genital mutilation (FGM) which is very prevalent in Nigeria, and by extension Africa and some parts of Asia”

“This is the time to talk about the development of women and men keeping the same pace in terms of development. This is not the time to mutilate anyone’s body, we are not in a slavery era neither are we in a stone age.

“We should not accommodate any form of harmful cultural practices because it is just not necessary. We should prioritize the right things. We should do the right things. We should ensure women and girls have equal rights. We should not allow culture that allow men to control women’s body

The Executive Director of Women’s right and Health Project who doubles as the Manager of Ireti resource center Lagos, Bose Ironsi said Nigeria is still ranking very high in terms of prevalence of female genital mutilation. That there is need to intensify awareness so that people won’t inherit bad culture but a good one.

“Nigeria is still ranking very high in terms of prevalence of FGM, and I know a lot of works had been done on this regard.

“The existence of the VAPP law compels the perpetrators of FGM to commit the immoral act underground. If you really look at it, there is no medical reasons why FGM should be done. They are doing it for cultural reasons which is against the right of the female. Culture is dynamic, it changes but the people don’t want to change.

PRESS RELEASE

Institutionalization of processes to foster cancer literacy amongst the Nigerian public…Dev Comms

To prevent cancer in Nigeria requires public awareness, literacy for early detection and treatment

To prevent deaths and infirmity due to Cancer in Nigeria would require national and sub-national public awareness and literacy aimed at finding cancer early and treating it.  As the world marks the second year of the 3-year World Cancer Campaign with the theme: Closing the care gap, Development communications Network calls for the institutionalization of processes to foster cancer literacy amongst the Nigerian public.  We call on health practitioners, inclusive of all cadres, especially health promotion and health education experts, national media organizations, and stakeholders to provide requisite resources as we unite to address the burden of the disease in the country.

The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) recently raised alarm over the rising figures of cervical cancer in the country.  The disease, which is easily preventable and treatable during its early stages has seen a whopping 12,000 cases diagnosed and 8,000 deaths registered annually.

Being one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the country and the second most common cancer amongst females after breast cancer, the country needs to address the low level of public cancer awareness.

Although general awareness of cancer screening, prevention, and treatment is low among global populations, especially in low and middle-income countries (including Nigeria) with poor literacy rates leading to an increase in cancer prevalence, there is an urgent need to fill this void with proper education as a tool for individual care. This year’s World Cancer Day should bring the attention of the public to how important it is to prevent cancer, find it early, and treat it.

In handling any problem, such as life-threatening diseases like cancer, awareness is the first step to its prevention. Nigeria needs to take action against cancer challenges with adequate funding of cancer registries as part of multi-thronged approaches to prevention and care.

Communities and individuals should not be left out of initiatives aimed at building stronger alliances and new collaborations to make a powerful appeal to governments at all levels in the country. This will ensure improvement in the public understanding of the severity of cancer, thereby promoting its prevention, detection and cure.
