*Coming Soon: Soludo’s One Million High Yielding Palm Seedlings.*

Currently, 84% of global palm oil supply is shared between Indonesia and Malaysia. Nigeria, Columbia and others make up the remaining percentage. United States, China, India, EU and Pakistan are the biggest off takers. The global market value is 61.1 billion USA dollars. Apart from getting back to once again be a global player in this industry, Cee Cee Soludo wants to use the free distribution of high yielding Palm Seedlings to lift many households/farmers from the stranglehold of poverty.

Soludo is guided in this by his belief that our greatness lies in our rich past. He is therefore picking up the pieces from where Dr. Michael Okpara’s administration stopped and his eyes are firmly focused on the entire value chain. So every year, his government will procure one million high yielding farm seedlings and distribute same free of charge to 100,000 farmers/households. Each farmer gets 10 free seedlings that start producing from 2- 4 years. It is estimated that in 4 years, the farmer would have gotten about 40 seedlings. This will adequately enable such household/farmer to escape from poverty. This will be an empowerment programme not just for the farmers but thousands that will be involved in the value chain business.

Fortunately, palm oil demand continues to grow because it is the most versatile of all vegetable oils. Palm oil can be processed to a wide range of products with melting points, consistencies and characteristics. Global conglomerates such as Lever Brothers are noteable off takers of the products at the corporate level.

However Quality consultant Mrs Ngozi Ekwueme counsels ,” as the seedlings are being distributed, the farmers should be trained on global gap requirements for safe crop. The ministry of Agriculture workers should also be trained to know what they should be doing in supervision. This will be able to make them keep track of all the fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals used in the plantation till havest time. This will ensure acceptance in the global market”

The good news is that Soludo is rapidly demonstrating by his actions thus far that sound economics is excellent politics. So like the Anambra footwear industry, like the palm oil industry. More are coming our way as we journey to our Liveable and prosperous Anambra smart Megacity.

Be of good cheers!!

PRESS RELEASE

LAGOS DEPLOYS NEWLY PROCURED BLOODMOBILE FOR BLOOD DONOR DRIVES

… Tasks citizens on voluntary blood donation

Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service has commenced the deployment of its newly procured bloodmobile; a mobile blood donation vehicle equipped with everything necessary for a blood donation procedure, to public and corporate organizations in continuation of the voluntary blood donation drives embarked on earlier in the month.

Speaking at a donor drive held at the headquarters of Ibile Oil and Gas, Ikoyi where the bloodmobile was recently deployed, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS), Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya explained that the procurement of the mobile blood donation center was approved by the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to aid blood donor drives and ease the conduct of community blood donation outreach campaign across Lagos.

She said: “Mr. Governor magnanimously approved the procurement of this specialized vehicle to help in our quest of meeting the State blood demand and ensure adequate supply of safe blood for transfusion in Lagos”.

Osikomaiya explained that the bloodmobile which was designed, configured and assembled out of a new coaster bus by a local engineer based in Lagos, has some remarkable features typical of a standard blood donation center including; compartments for registration and blood donor procedure, post donation and relaxation spot, blood storage compartment, two electrical donor chairs and an inbuilt air conditioner.

“With this specialized vehicle, our team can conduct donor drives in Lagos communities and public places seamlessly without the encumbrances of having to improvise and repeat set up of blood donation procedures for every donor drive.

“We sincerely appreciate Mr. Governor for this gift and we promise to reciprocate by increasing our donor drives, recruiting more voluntary blood donors and ensuring that only safe bloods is collected and transfused in our dear State”, She added.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary has tasked citizens to donate blood voluntarily in other to ensure availability of safe blood and blood products for transfusion in health facilities across the State.

Emphasizing the huge demand for blood and the need for voluntary blood donation, Osikomaiya disclosed that about 37% of the population are eligible and clinically fit to donate blood stressing that someone is always in need of blood every two seconds.

She noted that one pint of donated blood can save three lives adding that this is why efforts are being intensified by the State government to meet and surpass the State blood requirement through recruiting and retaining voluntary blood donors.

“Voluntary blood donors are heroes who deserve to be celebrated every day because the gift they give is the gift of Life. We encourage citizens to join this league of life savers by donating voluntarily”, She said.

Osikomaiya stated that the benefits of donating blood are numerous adding that voluntary blood donation gives a psychological upliftment and improvement in the state of mental health.

She said: “Blood donation helps to stimulate production of more blood thus maintaining good health, voluntary blood donors have access to blood without demand for replacement from LBSTS blood banks.

“Your blood is tested for hemoglobin, packed cell volume (blood level), viral diseases, blood group, Rhesus factor and genotype. It may uncover potential health problems such as elevated blood levels and low blood levels.

“It also helps to maintain iron stores at healthy levels which is linked to low cancer risk and give an opportunity to blood donors to have their clinical vitals done including blood pressure, pulse rate, weight, and height”.

She enjoined citizens who are in good general health and between the ages of 18 and 65 years to imbibe the culture of voluntary blood donation and donate blood at least once every three months.

While noting that the bloodmobile will be going round the State especially to the public places on donor drives, the Executive Secretary stated that citizens can also work into any of LSBTS dedicated voluntary blood donation centers at General Hospital Lagos and General Hospital Gbagada or the voluntary blood donation center at the Accident and Emergency Center, located at the old Toll Gate and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja to donate blood.

“Citizens can also walk into any of our blood banks inside our General Hospitals in Lagos State to donate voluntarily. Donate today, the Life you save may be yours”, she said.
