PRESS BRIEFING BY HON. MINISTER OF HEALTH, DR. OSAGIE EHANIRE AT THE PRESIDENTIAL TASK FORCE ON COVID-19 PRESS BRIEFING ON MONDAY 6th JULY, 2020 PROTOCOL

06/07/20

[post-marguee]

DANIELS G. O

PRESS RELEASE

As of today 6th of July 2020, Nigeria has recorded a total of 28,711 confirmed COVID-19 cases, out of 152,952 tests conducted, of which 11,665 have been treated successfully and discharged. We have regrettably recorded 645 fatalities.

2. Taking the statistics of the month of June alone, a total of 15,532 cases were confirmed from 74,580 tests, with 303 deaths on record.

This means that just under half of the total fatalities so far recorded, occurred in the single month of June; while we more than doubled the tests done and the number of cases detected. The reduction in case fatality rate is down to about 2.2%, in line with our plan, going forward. But it also draws our attention to the speed with which COVID-19 is growing, the time it took to double itself, and the reminder that we need to improve on our responses, to continue to strive for the best and prepare for worse.

3. It is also the plan of the Ministry of Health to boost overall COVID-19 sample collection, by preparing all eligible public and private hospitals nationwide to become collection sites. This will require working with State governments and NPHCDA to identify the facilities and the space within them, to conduct training for the personnel selected and supply both PPEs and sample collection kits, as well as the logistics to go around to recover test samples, and so better utilize available laboratory assets in the country, which even now are capable of handling far more cases than they presently do. If logistics around sample collection and delivery to test sites are better organized, a lot more will be achieved. However, the more we test, the more confirmed cases we shall find, of which the vulnerable will have to be prioritized for admission to treatment centers, even if they are not yet showing symptoms. States will be encouraged to use all opportunities to isolate other asymptomatic cases who may not qualify for supervised self Isolation, for the period they are deemed to be infectious or are at risk of infecting the vulnerable. It will also mean scaling up treatment and Isolation centers in states and the logistics for managing them.

4. With regard to petitions and reports available to me, I need to here appeal to citizens, especially those covid positive who feel no symptoms at all, not to take invitation to treatment centers as persecution, but to cooperate with health officials and understand that measures taken are protective and in the interest of all of us.

5. A strong 17 man team of the Federal Ministry of Health, led by the Executive Director of National Primary Health Development Agency, left Abuja for Calabar this morning to engage with the Cross River State government in setting up their covid19 response and aligning it with the national response. Agencies and many departments of the Ministry of Health, like NCDC, Hospital Services, Family Health, are represented in the delegation, to ensure the appropriate technical handshake between Federal and State service delivery pillars and also ensure that the disruption of routine medical services, which has been observed in many States, is minimized or eliminated in CRS. We have also called on the CRS NMA to suspend their strike action and receive the Ministry’s delegation. At the request of His Excellency the Governor of CRS, a senior Immigration officer is on Board to study the border challenges with Cameroon, as well as a Port Health officer to assess risks posed by sea travelers arriving CRS ports particularly from neighboring Central African countries of Congo, Gabon, Cameroon Angola etc. CRS is known to be a producer of various PPEs, including masks, for which the Governor wants SON endorsement, to have access to patronage.

6. With regard to Kogi, arrangements are under way to beef up security at FMC Medical Center Lokoja for protection of staff and patients. The Federal government will do all it can to attend to the needs of the citizens, while we seek ways to engage the State authorities.
7. The unfortunate figures on COVID-19 we see in other countries every day are sobering and must instruct us, that it is not the way we want to go. To protect ourselves more, I must advise citizens again that it is not enough to ask “what is government doing”? The question now is also, “what are you doing”? Whether as communities, associations or individuals, we are all in this together. It is not the Federal Government alone. This novel virus is highly contagious and if we do not cooperate and sacrifice, if we refuse to get treatment and decide to infect others, we could be responsible for some cases leading to death.
8. The Federal Government through the NCDC has launched an E-Learning platform on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) for healthcare workers. We urge them to utilize it, but shall also refocus on training states with high health workers infection. Infection rates in our treatment centres have however reduced overall. PPEs have been distributed to health facilities in good numbers and the use is being monitoredto reduce wastage. I urge our health workers to ensure appropriate use. I also particularly warn against unprofessional disposal of used PPEs in common waste dumps, where scavengers have been seen to pick them up for risky reuse. This is dangerous and a sure pathway to promoting community transmission. All COVID-19 waste is to be Incinerated. I also remind everyone that Covid19 treatment facilities not accredited by the responsible State or FCT accreditation committee are illegal and risky.
6. Finally, I wish to remind everyone that government run testing for COVID-19 is free. Please report anyone who demands payment for necessary action

7. Thank you for your attention.

GOVERNOR BABAJIDE SANWO-OLU BLOWS HOT AGAINST VIOLATORS OF COVID-19 GUILDLINES,PLACES FINE ON NONE USE OF NOSE MASKS

06/07/20

[post-marguee]

DANIELS G. O

Following the increasing number of COVID -19 pandemic cases in the state, Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has threatened to arrest and prosecute violators of the guidelines put in place in the state to flatten the curve ,saying such measure would act as deterrent to others.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said this during the sixteenth update on Corona virus pandemic as the incident commander in the management of the deadly virus in the state.

The governor emphasized that at this phase in the evolution of the pandemic in the society, taking personal responsibility becomes important than ever, not only for self-protection, but also for protecting other people, including loved ones.

He said, ” Mask usage is mandatory in public places. We are asking offices and business and commercial premises to refuse entry to any persons not wearing masks, in line with the Presidential Task Force directive on “No mask, no entry. No mask, no service.” Enforcement agencies will from this week charge defaulters to court, as the period of grace is now over.””

He appealed to Residents to continue to abide by other protocols like washing of hands regularly and as much as is possible maintain social distancing especially in public places.

Governor Sanwo-Olu added said on their part as a government, they will continue to do everything possible to protect and uphold the health and wellbeing of the people of Lagos State. You can see the evidence of this in the commitment we are putting into scaling up testing and isolation capacity, and enforcing the guidelines we have issued.

“With regards to enforcement, we are increasing our focus and efforts in this area. As you all know, guidelines and directives are effective only to the extent to which they are complied with by the citizenry. The best laws and guidelines are of no use if they are disregarded by the people for whom they have been issued.”

The governor urged the residents to join hands with the government to ensure that COVID -19 pandemic is defeated.

While recapping the highlights of the modified guidelines concerning what is permitted in the state, he said , “The nationwide curfew remains in force from 10pm to 4am, daily.
b. Places of worship will remain closed in Lagos State, until further notice.
c. All Social and Events Centers, and Social Clubs, will also remain closed, for now. However, a list of Social Clubs with verifiable Trustees and Governing Board that have met strict guidelines will be released from time to time for supervised openings, as approved by The Incident Commander on the recommendation of the Lagos State Safety Commission.

“Only Social Clubs in possession of a valid Provisional Safety Clearance Letter from the Safety Commission will be permitted to open, and they will in addition have to comply with all hygiene and physical distancing measures. We will not tolerate any violation of this directive.
e. All bars, day and night clubs, cinemas, games arcades, beaches and beach fronts, gyms and spas continue to remain closed. Eateries and restaurants are to continue to open as normal for takeout only. In-dining is still prohibited and a few defaulters in this regard will be shut down and prosecuted.

“All schools and educational institutions will remain closed. We continue to support online teaching of curriculum during this period. However, students in transitional classes, who have mandatory Public exams ahead of them are permitted to resume at only day schools as soon as possible for revision classes and examination. All educational establishments are to follow established public health guidelines and protocol for re-opening the schools for these categories of students. “

*WIDOWS PROJECT*
*Taraba State*
1st – 3rd July, 2020

*APPRECIATION*

CSMN expresses gratitude to all the brethren who donated to support our persecuted brethren. God bless you all and replenish you.

The details of the donors shall be published in the monthly Statement of Accounts.
We also thank Taraba Conservative Movement (TASCOMO) for executing the project on behalf of CSMN.

*PROJECT*
We identified 34 IDP camps in Taraba State with a total number of 1,802 widows. (22 IDP camps were identified in Benue.)
Please try and understand what the total figure of the widows represents. 1,802 husbands/fathers had been killed!

From reports from the field, the widows opted to receive cash which could be used to purchase food and other materials locally. Our intention was to distribute 5,000 each to them. This would have amounted to N9,010,000. This money is not available.
The available donation for the project was N1.4m.

We were only able to distribute N3,000 to widows in two Local Governments as follows:

Lau – 394 widows
Zing – 75 widows
(Full breakdown, which includes logistics would be provided in the monthly Statement of Account.)

There are still 1,351 widows in 32 IDP Camps yet to receive support from us.

*REPORTS*

“We attended to 394 widows in Lau. Truly, sir, we saw what mouth cannot explain. Our people are suffering too much.”

“Truly speaking our brethren are suffering due to lack of what to eat and good shelters. According to them, even after the crises, the Fulanis still came and destroyed their houses which they rebuilt.
Many children are already out of school because their parents have been killed. Still many have refused to go back for the fear of being killed because you can see a very big and vast fertile land but only Fulanis are grazing on it.”
Bro. C.

*CHRISTIAN RESPONSE*
The humanitarian need of the Christian IDPs should concern every Nigerian Christian. Under the circumstances, all we could do is to appeal for more support from Christians. Nigerian Christians are more than capable to provide for their persecuted brethren.
Give, according to the command of God, and share the burden with other Christians.
