NO MORE MEDICAL TOURISM FOR PRESIDENTS … AISHA BUHARI

19/05/23

SHINA J.O

President Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated the N21 billion Presidential Wing of the State House Medical Centre with the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, declaring that the facility will stop the need for the President and his family members from going abroad for medical treatment.

The wife of the President, who joined other dignitaries for the commissioning ceremony of the facility situated in the premises of Presidential Villa, Abuja, told state house correspondents that she came up with the idea of the Wing six years ago following the extensive stay of her husband abroad for medical treatment.

She said now that the facility is in place, Nigerian Presidents and their family members will no longer need to go abroad for treatment but may only fly medical experts to assist their colleagues in the country.

Asked her impression of the new medical center, she said: “I’m quite happy, feeling fulfilled. Though we are leaving but all the same, we thank God the project has come to reality.

“I have opted for it six years now. I initiated this project six years ago when my husband spent three months abroad, consecutively, 90 days. And it shouldn’t be because we have all the experts in Nigeria. We only need a good platform.

“The hospital that is supposed to serve the First Family is serving like 35,000 people which is quite much.

“That’s why I insisted we should have a VIP Wing within the proximity of the presidential villa.”

On whether the medical centre will now make it unnecessary for Nigerian leaders to go abroad for treatment, she responded: “Yes. This one is for the health and wellness of the First Family.

They don’t need to go abroad now. They may only need to fly in experts to help our people. You know.

“So, no need for any leader to spend months and months abroad because of health care.”

INEC,The All Progressives Congress APC And, Bola Tinubu have opposed the request made by the PDP and the Labour Party and their respective Presidential candidates to have the proceedings at the Presidential election tribunal broadcast live

In the counter affidavits filed by the parties in before the court, the APC said televising the proceedings will lead to unnecessary sensationalism and undue social media trial, which according to it. distracts from the kernel of the serious business before the court

It also says live broadcast of the proceedings will defeat the protection afforded to witnesses, exposing them to danger

The respondents have argued that journalists and media houses have already been covering and reporting the proceedings accurately, and therefore beaming it live will not only be unnecessary but lead to sensationalism, media trial and public embarrassment to the court

It submitted further that live coverage of election tribunal proceedings are not recognised in Nigeria and doing it this time will set a bad precedent with a likelihood of it influencing the panel, intimidating witnesses, and causing a distraction from the primary issues of the Petition

The motion on live broadcast of the court hearing is one of the motions which the Presidential election petition court is expected to hear when the pre-hearing of the PDP and Atiku Abubakar case resumes on Thursday

17/05/23

The Presidential Election Petition Court on Wednesday refused to recognize the Labour Party after two officials announced their presence in court

The court however recognized and recorded the presence of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi

The problem began when Duda Manuga, who sat beside Obi, stood up to announce her presence as the National Women Leader of the Labour Party. Soon after that, Lamidi Apapa who had assumed the role as the National Chairman of the LP announced his presence, seeking to be recognized as the party’s representative in the court’s proceedings for the day

In a quick ruling, the five member panel presided by Justice Haruna Tsamani ruled that due to the conflict in who is standing in for the party in court, it would not recognize any of the two persons

“If two persons are apppearing for the Labour Party, we are not recording anybody’s name as representing the party”, the court held.

Earlier, there was an altercation between the Lamidi Apapa group and Julius Abure group with Apapa questioning why Abure’s group was in court and insisting he is the court recognized national chairman of the party. It is the first time Apapa and his group are attending the court’s proceedings since the presidential election petition hearing began
