PRESS RELEASE

COVID 19: LAGOS ACTIVATES NEW OXYGEN PLANT AT INFECTIOUS DISEASE HOSPITAL

Lagos State Government has activated an Oxygen Plant within the premises of the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Yaba to provide swift support to COVID19 patients who require oxygen therapy.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi who activated the plant amidst the increase demand for oxygen at the isolation centre which is occasioned by the second wave of COVID19 infection noted that the deployment and activation of the oxygen plant is in furtherance of the commitment of the State government to deploy effective response to the COVID19 pandemic.

He explained that the increased demand for oxygen to treat COVID-19 patients in the second wave of the pandemic necessitated activation of oxygen generation capacity in the state.

While noting that the oxygen plant was built in collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Abayomi explained that the oxygen from the newly installed plant will be administered to patients through cylinders made available at hospital wards.

The Commissioner added that the operation of the plant will significantly make oxygen available for COVID19 patients and supply about 300 cylinders per day and six cylinders per hour for use of patients admitted at the isolation facility.

Said he: β€œWe recognized the importance of generating oxygen because of the large number of patients who are currently on admission in our isolation centres and are largely depending on oxygen. This has resulted in an escalating and alarming demand for oxygen”.

β€œThe oxygen plant facility could not have come at a better time than now, when the State is recording an increase in the number of people presenting with difficulty in breathing and requiring urgent oxygen therapy”, he added.

Abayomi disclosed that about 300 cylinders of gas is being used a day in the State isolation facility stressing that a patient with a critical case may use about six cylinders of oxygen within 24 hours.

He explained that oxygen plants are industrial devices designed for regular supply into healthcare facilities adding that the plants separate oxygen from other air components by using pressure swing adsorption or membrane separation techniques.

The Commissioner averred that high purity oxygen is needed in healthcare facilities and essential for patients undergoing COVID treatments.

β€œThis is particularly useful for patients with comorbidities who require prompt oxygen for survival. Oxygen from the plant will be very helpful for effective treatment due to proximity of the plant which serves as source.”

While restating the commitment of the state government in the fight against COVID19, the Commissioner assured that the present administration will not relent in its all-inclusive style of response against the pandemic by collaborating with the private sector more.

β€œThis collaboration between the Bill and Melinda Gate foundation is a good example of collaboration between government and the private sector”, he said.

*FROM LUTH CHIEF MEDICAL DIRECTOR*

*ALERT: Second Wave of Covid-19 is here*

Esteemed Colleagues,
The resurgence of Covid-19 through the newly mutated form is ravaging our land, claiming many lives.

Unlike what we witnessed in the first wave, this one is even more easily transmitted and deadlier too. It is therefore imperative for everyone first and foremost, accept that Corvid-19 pandemic is not over and we must prepare to confront it all over again.

What we see on the streets, worship centres and social interactions, parties and daily activities call for concern.

In a period when the “enemy” has doubled back and is attacking us ferociously, we seem to be celebrating a false victory and denying the danger is still around us.

We need to observe all the basic rules we have been following all along and wake up to the present reality.

Shelve all forms of social engagements for now:
no parties, no churches, mosques, meetings, faaji etc. Tell yourself it is better to stay alive.

Wash your hands frequently and before you touch the face, eyes and mouth

Wear face mask obligatorily. (Most important)

Maintain a social distance of at least 6ft away from others where you must be with anyone.

Insist others wear their facemasks at work and everywhere you are.

Do not hold face-to-face meetings with others, go virtual for now. If you must, go outside and hold such meetings, socially distancing, in an open, well-ventilated space, with windows open, not in a closed space with airconditioners.

If you love your aged relations, insist on these tenets for now. Do not go visiting them until the pandemic goes away.

Let every family member know these facts and discuss them openly.

We have seen an upsurge in the number of people who keep treating “malaria” instead of going for the Covid test. Many such then start using all sorts of steam inhalation and home remedies for their cough and chest congestion. It is not helpful to do this, especially if you are also diabetic, hypertensive or with a number of other health baggages, or above the age of 60.

It may be rather late by the time you are breathless and are rushed to the hospital. Most of those dying delayed going to the hospital till very late.

Remember, let us do the work of staying safe before we pray that God should help us. Prayers alone, without the work, is futile.

Please Stay Safe.
