The Italian national who brought the deadly Coronavirus to Nigeria has now tested negative to the disease.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi disclosed this on Thursday at a news conference to give update on the pandemic.

He said the index case, who had been receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Hospital, IDH, Yaba, had tested negative to the disease.

Abayomi said it was good news for Lagos and Nigeria for the index case to test negative.

He said he would not be allowed to go yet until a confirmatory test had been carried out within 48 hours, saying that if he tested negative the second time, he would be discharged.

The Italian was tested negative for Coronavirus on Thursday 27, February, 2020.

The patient entered Nigeria on the 25th of February from Milan, Italy for a brief business visit to LaFarge.

According to Abayomi, “He fell ill on the 26th February and was transferred to Lagos State Biosecurity Facilities for isolation and testing. COVID-19 infection was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.”

The Italian had gone to LaFarge, where he had contacts with staff of the company. Forty people were later quarantined at LaFarge, out of which one tested positive for Coronavirus.

The second case who was infected by the Italian tested negative few days after he was quarantined.

However, Abayomi said all new cases were responding to treatment at the IDH in Yaba, Lagos.

The Lagos Commissioner for health has confirmed four more cases, now bringing to a total of eleven cases to be confirmed in Lagos and a total of twelve for NIGERIA

The Lagos State Government on Thursday confirmed this at a news briefing .

Lagos Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi disclosed this on Thursday, saying that the government was currently following up over 1,300 contact cases.

Abayomi disclosed that 19 people were tested for Coronavirus on Wednesday in Lagos and that four out of them had tested positive to the virus and had been isolated for treatment at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

He said the first of the four new cases who tested positive to the disease was a woman who had contact with the woman who came from UK some days ago who was tested positive.

According to him, the second new case was a female who returned from France on 14th of March on a Turkish airline TK 1830.

The third case, he said, was a Nigerian male in his 50s who had not travelled anywhere, but was tested positive to the disease.

Abayomi stated that the fourth new case was a Nigerian male who arrived the country on 13th of March from Frankfurt to Lagos on Lufthansa airline, flight number LH568.

The commissioner, however, said more tests were still being carried out, saying that it was clear that “we have combination of imported cases and local transmission.

He appealed to people on the two flights to self-isolate themselves and to reach the government.

NIGERIAN SENATE SUSPENDS PLENARY TILL FURTHER NOTICE OVER COVID-19 FROM TUESDAY NEXT WEEK

Members of the Nigerian Senate have announced partial closure of activities as part of its preventive measures to prevent an outbreak of covid-19 in the the National Assembly.

The implications of this announcement which takes effect from Tuesday, 24th March, 2020 is that, the upper legislative chamber has suspended all public hearing till further notice.

This was made known on Thursday by President of the Senate, Ahmad. Lawan at the end of a closed session.

He noted that the Senate gallery will remain closed to the public till further notice including excursions from schools and other organizations .”

The new measure by the Senate came barely 24 hours after the House of Representatives reached a decision to restrict visitors to the National Assembly complex.

The confirmation of five new cases making a total of seven in Lagos on Wednesday; and another one from Ekiti making a total of eight has also resulted in the ban of all public gatherings exceeding fifty people,and closure of schools which takes effect from Monday 23rd March 2020.

From Monday March 23rd 2020,All public and private schools operating in Lagos state are to stop operation.

The directive according to Lagos state Government is part of the state Government’s preventive measures against the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in the state which has recorded seven confirmed cases of the Virus.

Commissioner for Education Adefisayo Folashade who gave the directive said the move become necessary to prevent children and their teachers from getting more vulnerable to the pandemic.

She noted that the closure was not intended to create panic but to arrest the spread of the disease,

She also assured that the state’s Incident Command Centre, headed by the Governor, will continue to trace all contacts of the identified cases.
She encourage anyone who has information about suspected cases to report to the nearest hospital or call the emergency telephone numbers

The government Of Lagos State has suspended all large religious gathering of more than 50 persons within the state.

The decision was reached at an stakeholder meeting between the state government and religious leaders to control the spread of COVID-19 which has increased to seven cases so far.

Information just reaching us now says five news cases of covid- 19 have been recorded in Nigeria, bringing total cases to Eight so far.

Four out of the additional cases are recorded in Lagos state, while one is from Ekiti State

The Situation was Confirmed by the Minister of Health Osagie Ehanire on Wednesday at a press briefing in Abuja,and the Lagos state commissioner for health.

The affected persons are said to have had a travel history to the U.S And the United Kingdom.

Two out of the five new cases are said to be Nigerians ,a mother and a baby of six weeks old,while one is an American who came in through the Nigeria Benin land Border.

While the mother and child are now at the Yaba Hospital for treatment,the process of Admission is said to be under way for the American.

The Commissioner has however urged people not to panic, but to be sober and adhere strictly to any instruction given by Government and health officials.

Meanwhile contact tracing has started for the new cases, while some activities by the ministry of health have been cancelled for public interest.

The Index Case is still on admission while family members of the third case have been quarantined

The Katsina State Ministry of Health, says it has recorded a first suspected case of COVID- 19

Speaking with news men the permanent secretary of the ministry, Kabir Mustapha noted that the patient who is presently on self-isolation came from Malaysia and developed symptoms that has necessitated further investigations.

The result of the blood samples test is expected to be out by Tomorrow Thursday 19th March 2020.

Mustapha said the contact tracing will begin as soon as the result turns out positive.

THE PATIENT IS SAID TO BE A THIRTY YEAR OLD NIGERIAN WHO RETURNED TO THE COUNTRY FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM ON THE THIRTEENTH OF MARCH, SELF ISOLATED HERSELF AND DEVELOPED SYMPTOMS AND LATER TESTED POSITIVE.

SPEAKING DURING A PRESS BRIEFING ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON IN LAGOS ,THE COMMISSIONER FOR HEALTH PROFESSOR AKIN ABAYOMI SAID SHE HAD BEEN MOVED TO THE ISOLATION CENTRE TWO AT YABA.

THE CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP OF LAGOS ALFRED ADEWALE MARTINS HAS EXPRESSED APPRECIATION TO THE LAGOS STATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY LASEMA,THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY NEMA,THE NIGERIA RED CROSS AND OTHER SECURITY AGENCIES FOR THEIR PROMPT RESPONSE WHICH ENSURED THAT THE SITUATION DID NOT GET WORSE.

CONTRARY TO REPORTS FROM SOME QUARTERS THAT MANY STUDENTS DIED,THE ARCHBISHOP IN A PRESS RELEASE ON MONDAY SAID ALL STUDENTS OF BETHLEHEM GIRLS COLLEGE WERE SAVED,INCLUDING THE REVEREND FATHER WHO WAS CONDUCTING THE MASS WHEN THE SAD INCIDENT OCCURRED.
