STATE OF THE REGION AFTER OVER65 YEARS OF OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION, AND & AGENDA FOR A NEW GOVERNMENT

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 2ND NIGER DELTA ALTERNATIVES
CONVERGENCE HELD IN PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE, ON THE 25TH OF APRIL
2023

On April 25, 2023, frontline civil society organisations, socio-cultural
groups, academics, traditional rulers, and individuals drawn from the
Niger Delta states of Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo,
Imo, Ondo, and Rivers assembled in the city of Port Harcourt for the 2nd
Niger Delta Alternatives Convergence (NDAC) for the purpose of setting a
pan Niger Delta socio-ecological agenda for the new political leadership
at the national and sub national levels that would be sworn-in on May 29th 2023.

The convergence discussed the state of the region after over
65 years of oil and gas exploration, and what the Niger Delta peoples
must do to immediately regain its dignity and rebuild the devastated
region.

The Convergence, was chaired by His Royal Majesty, Suanu Baridam, and
had a Keynote titled Looking Back and Thinking Forward: Imperatives of a
New Niger Delta Agenda delivered by Professor Sofiri Peterside of the
University of Port Harcourt, a panel discussion of experts, and several
interventions by notable persons and interest groups in the region. The
gathering thoroughly examined the critical issues facing the region, as
well as the opportunities, and strategies for addressing them.

OBSERVATIONS
The NDAC observed that the major multinational oil companies that have
operated in the Niger Delta region for the last 6 decades are driving a
divestment programme that has seen the companies clandestinely sell off
their onshore and shallow water assets in the region, while claiming
that they are doing so due to the ‘hostile operational environment and
associated huge operational cost” they are exposed to in the Niger Delta
region. The Convergence observed that this position is not only
misleading, but is also false. Even more worrisome is the fact that the
current divestment process is shrouded in secrecy and is being conducted
without the knowledge or participation of the so-called ‘host
communities’ whose traditional territories these companies have occupied
for more than six decades. These companies are not only divesting; they
are also abandoning derelict facilities and decades of problematic
relationships developed with oil-bearing communities.

The startling reality is that the Niger Delta has become an ecological
wasteland, considerably ravaged by the heedless pollution associated
with multi-national oil companies’ activities. The Convergence notes
that the contamination of soil, air, and water has resulted in the
poisoning of the inhabitants of the region, which has resulted in an
alarming increase in illnesses and a drop in life expectancy
considerably below the national average. Oil companies are divesting in
a bid to flee the climate justice imperative of their reckless actions
in the last 65 years.

The NDAC also observed that while Nigeria has intensified the
exploration and export of liquefied natural gas, the hazardous and
poisonous practice of gas flaring continues unabated and without any
clear position on when it will end. The NDAC notes with sadness that the
target for ending gas flaring has consistently been moved at least 8
times in the past. At the moment, all deadlines to end the practice have
been abandoned, while oil companies continue to impact the health and
livelihoods of the Niger Delta people through flaring.

The Convergence equally observed that despite the accrual of significant
financial resources to the region, including through the 13% derivation
principle, the ecological funds, the

06/05/23

SHINA J.O

L President Muhammadu Buhari has again expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria considering the turnout of voters and the generally peaceful atmosphere under which it took place.

The President added that the country learnt lessons which would make subsequent polls even better.

The President said this on Friday in London while addressing his colleagues at the Commonwealth Leaders Summit as part of the major events leading to the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III as King of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Commonwealth.

The theme of the event focused on the future of the Commonwealth as a body and the role of the Youth.

According to the President, “these elections saw a remarkable turnout of voters and proof that Nigeria’s democracy is maturing. Despite some pockets of violence, we have demonstrated that a government can be elected peacefully and fairly.

“Lessons have been learnt and moving forward, we hope to perform even better. Based on this, I am delighted to note that we have taken another step towards deepening our democracy with peaceful, transparent and credible outcomes. Though we are aware that challenges still exist, we are committed to working towards a greater participation of all Nigerians in the democratic process, including those in the diaspora.”

While thanking the Commonwealth for sending a team to witness the conduct of the elections, he noted that the elections were generally free and fair, and the mood of the Nation after the announcement of the winners so far shows that democracy in Nigeria is maturing and can only get better.

President Buhari highlighted the key role Nigerian youths played during the elections as well as in support of national development, attributing a great part of this youth participation in the General Elections to the assent of ‘Not Too Young To Run’ Bill signed into law by his Administration in 2018.

He announced that Nigeria would also host the Commonwealth Youth and Students Summit for African Region, with the theme, ‘Making Change Happen’ in Abuja from May 9-11, this year.

The Nigerian leader in a statement issued by his special adviser on media and publicity Femi Adesina used the opportunity to bid farewell to his colleagues, expressing joy at shared aspirations and values within the period:

“As I come before you today, I am also mindful that this would be my last official engagement with His Majesty The King and some of you as I leave office on 29 May 2023. I, therefore, feel both humble and grateful for this extraordinary and significantly important moment.

“Over the years, I have worked cordially with the leaders of Commonwealth to achieve the values and principles of the Commonwealth which are shared by its members – the aspirations of the Commonwealth family which include positioning it to be a strong and respected voice in the world and improving the lives of all its citizens are being vigorously pursued,” he said.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has distanced itself from any plans to scuttle the inauguration of President-Elect Bola Tinubu on May 29 as alluded by one Ali Mohammed of Arewa Youths Assembly who are calling for the arrest and prosecution of NLC President, Joe Ajaero

In a statement by NLC Head of Media Benson Upah, the workers body says the allegations are cheap blackmail intended to divert the attention of the leadership of the NLC from its obligation and mission to the people.

The NLC says it is a pan- Nigerian body and has no room for nepotism and secret plots

The Arewa group had acused the NLC President, Joe Ajaero of plans to scuttle the inauguration of the Ahmed Bola Tinubu and that he is working with IPOB to actualise the presidential ambition of Peter Obi of the Labour Party

The group equally said that Ajaero is using the NLC to promote Biafran agenda and that along with his general secretary, Emmanual Ugboaja received SUV Jeeps, to be silent o the CBN cash policy.

The group equally accused NLC that it is the first time the President and General Secretary will be from the same ethnic group which makes it convenient for them to prosecute the Biafràn agenda

Ajaero is also being acused of using the Igbo-dominated NLC to sabotage the economy of the country and that “the invasion of Lagos and Imo Airports by IPOB fundamentalists masquerading as NLC is only but the beginning of what Ajaero is hatching to stop Tinubu from taking the oath of office on May 29.

The legal battle over the rightful ownership of the 1996 Nollywood movie “DOMITILLA” between ace Nollywood actors film producers Zeb Ejiro and Anne Njemanze is about to be resolved.

The Trademark Tribunal at the Trademark headquarters Abuja Thursday May 4th 2023 cancelled the registration and application of Domitilla as a trademark by Nollywood actress and the lead cast in the film; Anne Njemanze saying she acted in bad fate.

Zeb Ejiro and Anne Njemanze since March have been at loggerheads in a legal battle over the ownership of the classic film Domitilla.

Njemanze had sued the Domitilla film producer director Ejiro alongside Filmone Entertainment, Film Trybe Media and Dioni Visions Entertainment to the tune of ‎50 million naira over the remake of ‘Domitilla: The Reboot.’

The legal action however did not augur well with the ace filmmaker Ejiro who reacted by serving the actress a countersuit of 500 million naira; describing her lawsuit as a gold-digging exercise.

Registrar Trademark Department Shefiu Adamu who made the pronouncement at the resumed hearing of a petition filed by Ejiro seeking revocation of a purported registration of the film “Domitilla and Device” by Njemanze.

In September 2020 Njemanze reportedly trademarked the name “Domitilla” a brand the filmmaker Ejiro challenged.

In a ruling delivered by the Chief Registrar, Shafiu Adamu Yauri the tribunal said all the documents issued by the commission to Njemanze were in error.

The Trademark Registry has adjourned the matter for ruling, if the parties in the dispute failed to reach an agreement of settlement.
